Story collections with an online community allow visitors to the collection to create a login account, comment on stories, and take other actions typical of online communities.

I Had Cancer

I Had Cancer is an online community for people affected by cancer, including those who identify as survivors, fighters, and supporters. The project was initiated by Mailet Lopez, who before being diagnosed with breast cancer at age 33, had co-founded a digital design agency. Members of the community create a profile in which they write a bio and upload a personal photograph; they may also share a more in-depth testimonial in their “Journal” area, which is viewable only by those in the member’s “circle.” The project is an interesting example of online peer-to-peer education and support. It has received a good bit of press attention, and received a Webby Award in 2013 for the Best Community Website.
