Vital Stories Interactive

Vital Voices describes their mission as to “to identify, invest in and bring visibility to extraordinary women around the world by unleashing their leadership potential to transform lives and accelerate peace and prosperity in their communities.” The organization features many stories of such extraordinary women (see also Vital Voices), and this interactive site encourages visitors to explore individual women’s stories in greater depth. Each ‘featured voice’ includes a video, slideshow of captioned photos, and links to related content.

Freedom Stories

This small collection of videos is the product of a novel production approach: young and promising Australian filmmakers were enlisted to create short films that tell stories of young people “coming to terms with their sexuality and gender.” The resulting films have high production value, and are presented on a website that simultaneously presents the story and presents the young filmmaker.

I’m a Mormon

The Mormon church produces an annual set of “I’m a Mormon” videos, in which a combination of ordinary and famous Mormons tell the story of their lives and their faith. The videos have a high production value and do a nice job of personalizing a faith that is not universally well understood. The stories can be accessed through both the Mormon video channel and through a Searchable Archive of Mormon Testimonials of Mormon testimonials.

The Waiting Room

The Waiting Room Storytelling Project is a collection of short videos from the Waiting Room documentary project, which is a feature-length documentary film that chronicles a day in the life of a hospital emergency room in Oakland, CA. The collection holds approximately sixty 2-5 minute videos, and is sortable by emotions (e.g., courage, faith, fear, frustration) and issues (e.g., access to care, chronic disease, language barriers, violence). The stories are stored on Vimeo, and the project’s web site describes a set of ambitious possibilities to distribute the stories, including a mobile app and an interactive platform in the waiting room of the hospital that is the setting for the feature-length documentary.

Still Serving

Still Serving is an online video series that creates monthly profile videos of veterans of the US military that are “still serving” their country through their volunteer or professional work. Each story profiles one veteran, and features the veteran retelling his or her military service and work after active duty. The series experiments with form; though all are 12-15 minutes long, and most are short documentary profiles, some are not particularly story-like, such as those that feature a host conducting a one-on-one interview with the featured veteran.

Stories from Skid Row

The Union Rescue Mission, in Los Angeles, CA, has produced a series of videos about individuals that the mission has helped in their journey out of homelessness. The videos are impressively produced and the organization has created them at a steady pace, enough so that they constitute a “series,” Stories from Skid Row.
