The Village Church

The Village Church of Texas, a church with a robust web presence, hosts a collection of personal stories from members about their journey to faith and the church. The stories are gathered by a volunteer “Stories Team,” (see Village Church Stories Team Application Form) though they all have a high production value. Stories are told in audio, video, and text and image, and reflect personal spiritual experiences.

Saving the Sierra

Saving the Sierra: Voices of Conservation in Action was a public media and citizen storytelling project focused on the geographic region around the Sierra Nevada mountains. The stories are short audio reflections in which an individual with connection to the Sierra–among them ranchers, native tribes, loggers, schoolteachers, and professional environmentalists–describe this connect and share their views on conserving the region. Some of these stories were collected at a mobile “storybooth” that traveled around the region, and the stories are archived on the project website.

Nation Inside

Nation Inside is a project of the story strategy firm Working Narratives, focused on advocacy against mass incarceration in the US. The project is centered around a web platform that collects personal stories in a “Storybank,” and acts as a hub that activists can use to create campaigns. While the Storybank contains more than just digital personal experience narratives—there are also, for example, many newsy blog posts and videos of meetings—there are a fair number of video and audio testimonials from family members of incarcerated Americans. The platform also enables incarcerated Americans to telephone in their testimonials via a toll-free “Storyline.”

Murmur

Launched in 2003, Murmur is an early locative media project. The original Murmur project collected audio stories related to locations throughout Toronto, CA. Signs shaped like big green ears was posted at each location about which a story had been made, and people with a mobile phone could dial the phone number and code on a particular sign to hear the story about that location. The stories are told by ordinary people and are about places not typically visited by tourists. The Murmur project was repeated in other cities in Canada and worldwide, but is no longer ongoing. The Toronto project’s website maps the stories on lovely hand-drawn maps of the city’s neighborhoods.
